Medicine that heals
What is naturopathic medicine?
As an ND, I am licensed to practice naturopathic medicine in the state of Maine. I can diagnose diseases, perform exams, order tests, as well as prescribe pharmaceuticals (although I rarely find the need to do so.) Our training is a 4 year graduate program which begins with the basic sciences: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, etc. We then pass our basic science boards and begin our clinical studies. Naturopathic philosophy is based more on restoring the body's physiology, rather than symptom management. We honor the knowledge in the body: it's ability to heal; and work with this, rather than against it. Herbal medicine, nutrition, physical medicine, and acupuncture all serve to support the functions of the body and mind, so the pathology is reversed and healing can occur. This is done by removing the obstacles, supporting the detoxification, and providing the essential nutrients and support to the systems of the body.
This is traditional medicine - the way our ancestors practiced. It also incorporates modern science with a deep understanding of biochemistry. The goal is to treat the true cause of the disease. We treat the whole body, and each person as an individual, because everyone is different. Your healthcare plan will be created specifically for you and will incorporate the whole picture of what your body and mind are going through.
